Wanting to be more physically active is an admirable thing, but for many, it can be hard to find the time to get in a workout. For many, going for a walk every day is the best we can manage, with timeslots often only open in the later hours of the day. Walking at night presents us with a few potential risks and so it’s important to be aware and be mindful of your safety. Invest In Reflective Gear
If you’re walking outside on the streets at night, it is in your best interest to invest in some reflective gear to increase your visibility. You may be able to see the cars coming down the street but at night, even if you’re wearing bright colors you can be easy to miss.
Bring A Light
If reflective gear isn’t your thing, then consider investing in a headlamp or a flashlight to bring along on your nightly walks. A headlamp is a great way to see what’s ahead of you while also making you much more noticeable to nearby traffic. Being as visible as possible is key to your safety when walking outside at night.
Be Mindful Of Strangers
It may seem paranoid to worry about being attacked by strangers while walking around your neighbourhood but it does happen and it is better to be safe than sorry! Usually, victims of random attacks on the streets are targeted due to being an easy target so consider bringing a friend or a dog if you know of one and bringing along a walking stick wouldn’t hurt either.
Pay Attention To What’s In Front Of You
Many mobile phones these days come with a flashlight built right in to make it easy to see things in the dark but when you are out walking at night, your cell phone may be more of a distraction than a walking aid. It doesn’t matter how good your phone’s flashlight is if you’re actually walking around staring at the screen! Avoid distractions while walking and keep your eyes on the road ahead!
If you’re planning on going out at night, being prepared with a few choice items will go a long way to ensuring your nightly walk goes off without a hitch! Make sure to bring a form of identification and a couple dollars in case you need to call a cab. Consider bringing along some form of personal defence such as a whistle or maybe some pepper spray to ward off attackers if danger presents itself!
If the above all sounds like too much, consider walking indoors instead. Many fitness centers will have an indoor track you can walk around, so you don’t have to worry about traffic or stranger danger!
